Overviews

The Mundum Trek is one of Nepal's newest and most captivating off-the-beaten-path trekking adventures, offering an authentic journey into the untouched landscapes and ancient heritage of eastern Nepal. Officially introduced by the Government of Nepal in 2018 as one of the country's top tourism destinations, this remarkable trail leads travelers through the pristine hills of Khotang and Bhojpur, where breathtaking Himalayan scenery blends seamlessly with the centuries-old traditions of the Kirati people.

Unique Sherpa Trek & Expedition Pvt. Ltd. proudly offers professionally organized Mundum Trek packages that combine experienced local guides, personalized service, and responsible tourism practices. This hidden gem is ideal for trekkers seeking peaceful trails, spectacular mountain panoramas, rich biodiversity, and genuine cultural immersion away from Nepal's crowded trekking routes.

Named after the sacred Mundum, the holy scripture of the Kirati community, the trek showcases the vibrant traditions, customs, rituals, hospitality, and lifestyle of Nepal's indigenous Rai, Limbu, Sunuwar, Yakkha, and Kulung communities. Visitors experience authentic village life while exploring sacred landscapes deeply connected to Kirati spirituality, shamanism, and nature worship.

The trail passes through dense rhododendron, bamboo, oak, and pine forests, alpine meadows, rolling ridges, sparkling rivers, waterfalls, sacred ponds, and picturesque villages that remain largely untouched by modernization. Trekking in this remote region feels like stepping back in time, where traditional lifestyles continue to flourish amid magnificent Himalayan surroundings.

Unlike Nepal's commercial trekking routes, the Mundum Trek offers true wilderness camping at higher elevations, creating an unforgettable adventure for nature lovers and photographers. Lower sections provide comfortable local teahouses and homestays, while the upper trail transforms into an exciting camping experience beneath star-filled Himalayan skies.

Whether you're searching for cultural exploration, peaceful mountain trails, wildlife encounters, or panoramic Himalayan viewpoints, the Mundum Trek with Unique Sherpa Trek & Expedition Pvt. Ltd. delivers one of Nepal's most rewarding and authentic trekking experiences.

Mundum Trek Route

Your unforgettable Mundum Trek begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Diktel, the gateway to eastern Nepal's hidden Himalayan wilderness. After exploring Diktel, the trekking adventure starts toward Chakhewa Bhanjyang, passing through beautiful villages, terraced fields, and traditional Kirati settlements.

From Chakhewa Bhanjyang, the trail follows spectacular ridgelines toward Dhotre, crossing expansive grasslands, grazing pastures, shepherd settlements, and pristine forests. Known locally as the "Ridge Trail," this section rewards trekkers with uninterrupted views of rolling hills and distant snow-capped peaks.

Continuing onward, the journey reaches Maiyung, where the camping section of the trek officially begins. Here trekkers explore the famous Maiyung Danda and the beautiful Hans Pokhari, a peaceful alpine pond that attracts both local visitors and migratory birds. Every year, the surrounding meadows host vibrant local festivals celebrating Kirati culture.

The adventure then continues to Rawadhap Village, home to the stunning Laure Hill, before reaching the sacred Salpa Bhanjyang (Kulupongkho). Throughout the camping section, the experienced team from Unique Sherpa Trek & Expedition Pvt. Ltd. prepares comfortable campsites, delicious freshly cooked meals, and enjoyable evenings around a warm campfire beneath the Himalayan stars.

One of the most exciting days of the trek is the climb to Silicho Peak (4,156 meters), the highest point of the journey. The summit rewards trekkers with spectacular panoramic views of more than thirty Himalayan peaks, including Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Lhotse, Nuptse, Mera Peak, Shishapangma, and many other magnificent summits.

Nearby lies the sacred Salpa Pokhari, one of the holiest pilgrimage sites of the Kirati religion, believed to be the divine dwelling place of Goddess Sumnima. The peaceful alpine lake adds both spiritual significance and natural beauty to the trekking experience.

After enjoying the breathtaking scenery and spiritual atmosphere, the trail returns via Hyakule and Hans Pokhari before concluding in Bhojpur, completing one of eastern Nepal's most scenic and culturally rewarding trekking adventures.

Major Attractions of the Mundum Trek

The Mundum Trek offers an extraordinary combination of untouched nature, rich indigenous culture, sacred pilgrimage sites, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes that few trekking destinations in Nepal can match.

One of the major highlights is experiencing authentic Kirati culture through traditional villages and welcoming homestays. Trekkers have the opportunity to enjoy local cuisine, traditional music, unique customs, and the legendary hospitality of the Rai, Limbu, Sunuwar, Kulung, and Yakkha communities. According to Kirati tradition, every guest is regarded with the highest respect and treated as a blessing.

The region is also culturally diverse, where Sherpa, Gurung, Magar, Tamang, Brahmin, Chhetri, and Dalit communities peacefully coexist, creating a fascinating blend of traditions, languages, festivals, and lifestyles.

Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the incredible biodiversity of the Mundum region. During spring, the forests burst into color with more than twelve species of rhododendrons blooming across the hillsides. The protected forests are also home to endangered wildlife, including the red panda, Himalayan black bear, barking deer, ghoral, wild water buffalo, pheasants, partridges, and numerous Himalayan bird species.

The trek's dramatic landscapes feature rugged ridges, alpine grasslands, shepherd huts, ancient forests, crystal-clear ponds, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking more than thirty Himalayan peaks. Every day presents spectacular photography opportunities and peaceful moments surrounded by untouched wilderness.

The spiritual importance of the region makes the trek even more unique. Sacred sites such as Salpa Pokhari and Silicho Peak hold deep religious significance in Kirati mythology. Local beliefs describe Salpa Pokhari as the sacred home of Goddess Sumnima, where bathing in its waters symbolizes spiritual purification. Silicho Peak is believed to be the residence of the Sky God Paruhang, who blesses devotees with prosperity, health, and happiness.

Another scenic attraction is Hans Pokhari, also known as the "Duck Pond," named after its unique duck-shaped appearance and the wild ducks that frequently visit the tranquil lake.

Throughout the journey, trekkers pass ancient monasteries, Chortens, temples, traditional resting places (Chautaras), Himalayan bamboo forests, temperate woodlands, alpine meadows, and remote villages, making every day diverse and rewarding.

The Mundum region is also famous for its wild rock bees (Bhir Mauri), whose honey is harvested by skilled local honey hunters using traditional techniques passed down for generations. Visitors trekking during local festivals may also witness colorful celebrations such as Sakela, Shivaratri, Bala Chaturdashi, Ram Navami, and Teej, providing unforgettable cultural experiences.

Travelers with extra time can extend their journey by visiting the sacred Halesi Mahadev Temple, the scenic Rupakot area, or hiking to the panoramic Temke Hill, further enriching their eastern Nepal adventure.

Best Season for the Mundum Trek

The best time to enjoy the Mundum Trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to early December), when weather conditions are most favorable and mountain views are at their finest.

Spring transforms the trail into a colorful paradise as rhododendrons, magnolias, orchids, and countless alpine flowers bloom across the forests. Mild temperatures, longer daylight hours, and crystal-clear mountain views create ideal trekking conditions for photographers, nature lovers, and adventure seekers.

Autumn is equally spectacular, offering stable weather, excellent visibility, lush green landscapes after the monsoon, and comfortable trekking temperatures. The clear Himalayan skies provide outstanding panoramic views of Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and many surrounding peaks. Light snowfall may occur at higher elevations toward late autumn, adding even more beauty to the landscape.

Although the trek is possible during other seasons, spring and autumn provide the safest trail conditions, the best cultural experiences, and the most rewarding mountain scenery.

Travel Insurance for the Mundum Trek

Unique Sherpa Trek & Expedition Pvt. Ltd. strongly recommends purchasing comprehensive travel insurance before undertaking the Mundum Trek in Nepal.

As trekking routes pass through remote Himalayan regions where weather conditions can change rapidly, travel insurance provides valuable protection against unexpected emergencies. A suitable policy should include high-altitude trekking coverage, emergency helicopter evacuation, medical treatment, trip cancellation, personal accidents, delayed or lost baggage, and natural disaster assistance.

Having proper travel insurance offers peace of mind, allowing trekkers to fully enjoy their adventure while ensuring financial protection should unforeseen situations arise during the journey. Our experienced trekking team is always ready to assist with emergency coordination whenever necessary, making your safety our highest priority.

Additional Information

Additional information of Mundum Trail Trek.

The Mundum Trail Trek is one of the most unique and culturally enriching trekking experiences in Nepal, offering a rare opportunity to explore the traditions, landscapes, and spiritual heritage of the Kirati Rai community. Unlike the more popular trekking destinations in Nepal, such as Annapurna or Everest, the Mundum Trail is relatively undiscovered, making it perfect for travelers seeking a peaceful, authentic, and immersive experience. This trail is located primarily in the Bhojpur District and extends through surrounding mid-hill areas, including Khotang and Sankhuwasabha districts, allowing trekkers to experience the diverse natural and cultural landscapes of eastern Nepal.

The trek is centered around the Mundum, the ancient spiritual scripture and oral tradition of the Rai people, which guides their rituals, social structure, and connection with nature. Trekkers on this trail have the unique opportunity to witness daily life in Rai villages, including traditional farming practices, local festivals, religious ceremonies, and spiritual practices led by community shamans. The villages along the trail retain a distinct architectural style, with stone and wood houses, communal spaces, and sacred sites that reflect centuries-old traditions. Through interaction with local families, travelers gain an authentic understanding of the Rai way of life, which emphasizes harmony with nature, respect for ancestors, and communal cooperation.

Geographically, the Mundum Trail traverses mid-hill terrains, rolling meadows, forests, and ridge lines. The trek’s highest point, Silichung Hill, rises to 4,165 meters and offers panoramic views of major Himalayan peaks, including Everest, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga. Along the route, trekkers pass through Salpa Pokhari, Panch Pokhari, and other scenic highland lakes that are both spiritually significant and visually stunning. The trail also features lush rhododendron forests, alpine pastures, terraced fields, and meandering rivers, offering ample opportunities for photography, birdwatching, and nature appreciation. The elevation gain is moderate compared to higher Himalayan treks, making it accessible to trekkers with reasonable fitness levels while still offering a sense of adventure and high-altitude achievement.

The Mundum Trail Trek is designed as a community-based tourism initiative, ensuring that the benefits of trekking directly support local livelihoods. Accommodation along the trail is provided in community lodges and homestays, where trekkers enjoy traditional Nepali meals and experience warm local hospitality. The trek is organized by Unique Sherpa Trek & Expedition Pvt. Ltd. with Unique Sherpa Trek & Expedition Pvt. Ltd.

Best Packing Tips for Mundum Trail Trek

The most important Mundum Trail Trek equipment includes comfortable trekking boots, moisture-wicking socks, thermal layers, trekking pants, a fleece jacket, an insulated jacket, waterproof and windproof clothing, trekking gloves, a sun hat, UV-protection sunglasses, SPF 50+ sunscreen, trekking poles, a headlamp, a suitable sleeping bag, water bottles, a first-aid kit, and personal medication.

A practical clothing system is:

Base Layer → Fleece Jacket → Insulated Jacket → Waterproof & Windproof Shell

Because the Mundum Trail passes through forests, ridgelines, rural villages, and remote mountain areas, weather protection is particularly important. Keep your rain jacket, water, snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, headlamp, medication, and trekking poles easily accessible in your daypack.

For wet seasons, add a backpack rain cover, waterproof packing bags, gaiters, and insect or leech protection. For colder months, additional thermal layers and a warmer sleeping bag may be required.

The Mundum Trail is less developed than Nepal's major trekking routes, so trekkers should pack carefully and avoid unnecessary weight while ensuring that essential personal and safety equipment is included.
